I just saw James Gunn’s Superman, and honestly… I loved it. I’m a huge James Gunn fan—always have been. Even his Scooby-Doo era. So I was hyped, but I also came in a little nervous. Everything Gunn said about this movie leading up to it made it sound like it would be a shrine to Superman. I thought, “Oh great, we’re about to watch two hours of Superman worship.”
But it’s not that. This isn’t some pedestal version of Superman—it’s actually really grounded. The movie jumps right in and shows you what makes Superman who he is, without dragging us through another origin story. And somehow, despite how much reverence Gunn clearly has for the character, it still feels human.
I’ve been thinking about it for 24 hours now, and honestly… this might be my favorite James Gunn movie. And that’s saying a lot.
That said, it’s not perfect. There are a few things I didn’t like:
Exposition Dumping – Some dialogue was painfully unnatural. Like, “This is why X is happening,” and it’s just thrown in awkwardly.
CGI in the Middle Act – There are chunks where the visuals feel weirdly rushed or sloppy. Comic-booky? Sure. But rough in parts.
Not Enough Clark – This is Superman’s movie, not Clark Kent’s. If you’re hoping for Daily Planet vibes or more human interaction, you’ll be a little let down.
But none of that broke the movie for me. The color palette is beautiful. It leans into the comic book aesthetic in a way that’s fun and vibrant without feeling cheap. It reminded me of something Sam Raimi would do—embracing the camp instead of hiding from it.
Every character was likable. Gunn just has a way of breathing life into obscure, weird characters and making you care. Mr. Terrific? Never heard of him before this. Now I want more. And if you're already a Gunn fan, you’ll feel right at home. If you're not? This movie probably won’t convert you.
